Solidarity @ Sunrise
Reed students to show solidarity for Portland immigrant community and encourage others to get involved in anti-ICE organizing.
On the morning of October 3, Reed students from a chapter of the Sunrise Movement will get up before dawn to launch a visual and artistic takeover of the Quad, calling on students to get involved in anti-ICE organizing and show up for our community.
Right now, ICE is kidnapping our neighbors and tearing apart our communities. We need both individual intervention and city policy to get federal agents out of our home. We are calling on Reedies to get involved. Stay aware of local updates, donate to mutual aid organizations, and learn how to directly intervene when you witness ICE activity.
Sunrise Reed members will spend the early hours of the morning adorning the Qquad with giant banners, chalk art, informational articles, donation links, and ways students can get involved in our off-campus community. Sunrise Reed hopes that this action will inspire students to take actions to support our friends, families, and neighbors who are impacted by ICE. These Reedies also hope to draw attention to recent city commission discussions, including proposals to shut down the Macadam Detention Center, strengthen Portland's status as a sanctuary city, legally prevent federal agents and members of the Portland Police Bureau from obscuring their identities, and ban the use of carcinogenic chemical weapons against protesters.
This event is in coalition with other Sunrise hubs in the Portland area as well as countless hubs across the country participating in the October 3rd National Day of Action. Sunrise Reed plans to continue hosting trainings, building a movement of mass resistance, and strengthening our organizing skills through future monthly days of action.
Throughout history, we have seen students, workers, and young people topple authoritarian regimes. Students are often the first to act, and catalyzing movements of mass resistance. We are a part of a long -line of young people who have bravely stood against fascist regimes. Which side are you on?
Sunrise Reed wants you to step up for our community, whether that be through showing up on the frontlines, storytelling, caregiving, and/or donating. Your non-compliance and radical reimagining of our world is absolutely vital to winning this fight.
