Double Shot: Sometimes Coffee
Update: In our Interlude issue, we mentioned Broken Robot was going to reopen at an indeterminate time in the future. They’re now open every day except Tuesday under the name Gladstone Coffee. The updated hours aren’t yet on Apple or Google Maps, but they’re open from 7am-1pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 8am-1pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Walkability/Accessibility: [A-] Sometimes Coffee is located next to/inside of Pan Con Queso on Gladstone & 28th. This lies on the 10 Line which has infrequent service, but runs directly from Reed if you can catch it. They are open 7am-noon Tuesday through Friday, and open 8-11am on Saturdays. They are looking to expand their hours, but as of right now this is where they stand. (This cafe is operated by one man, so I cut them some slack personally -Ishani)
Pricing: [B+] Their pricing is solid, a latte is $5, a tea is $3.50. The only item over $6 is the pour over, which is made by hand.
Coffee quality (and option variety): [C+] Their coffee is pretty good, but there isn’t a lot of variety. As always, we ordered a cortado and a latte, as well as their pour over. The pour over was very interesting: light, almost tea-like, which is an experience that we’ve never had before. It’s well balanced and a good candidate for an initial tasting experience for those looking to get into tasting coffee. Their cortado was fruity and slightly acidic, but a little muted for our tastes. The latte was solid, and even more muted still than the cortado, but this could have been due to the specific milk to coffee ratio in our drink. They don’t have many flavored syrups, so we did not try them.
Food quality (and option variety): [B+] They only have two food options, but they’re both killer. The apple bread is sweet, really closer to cake than bread, and made with fresh apples and toasted walnuts. The blackberry scones are made with fresh blackberries, with well-balanced sweetness, a good crust, and a soft inside. Both are made fresh every morning. Unfortunately, they are not open simultaneously with Pan Con Queso.
Atmosphere: [B] Sometimes Coffee has only outdoor seating, so your mileage may vary. There’s a gas fire pit to stay warm, and the outdoor seating is covered.
Alternative Drinks: [B+] They have tea but no chai. We were not pressed about this but the rest of you shouldknow. They use quality loose leaf, but are still dialing in their ratios and asked us for feedback. Their current ratio is a little weak for hot tea, but perfect for iced tea. We put ours in the fridge overnight and had a perfect iced tea the next day.
