Grace and Rocky Save Literature
Did you also dream of becoming an astrophysicist, only to end up at Reed where there is a singular course on astrology? In that case, Project Hail Mary is the book for you. Recently turned into a hit film, Project Hail Mary is quite possibly one of the best movies that has come out this year. But more than that, it’s an amazing novel, full of (somewhat) human connection and in depth exploration of scientific concepts.
Although it’s made its mark as a beautiful science fiction story, I’d argue that it could also be considered a great philosophical text as well. This text grapples with many issues across various disciplines of science, from microbiology to astrophysics, as well as moral issues, such as (SPOILER ALERT) the moral implications of bombing Antarctica (okay, spoiler alert over). Beyond just that, this novel grapples with the age old question of whether the ends justify the means in a very careful and meticulous way. Constantly weighing the moral implications of what must be done to save humanity and what must be sacrificed to make way for that, Andy Weir challenges readers to grapple with several ethical conundrums.
Alternating between the present day and the past through flashbacks, Weir manages to weave together a wonderful narrative detailing advanced space travel and navigating communication barriers with interplanetary species. The narration style of this story is quite extraordinary and keeps the reader engaged throughout the story. This feat is quite admirable, given the daunting nature of the novel. Perhaps one of the more accurate science fiction novels, Project Hail Mary contains a wealth of scientific information and does not shy away from explaining various concepts. When it comes to the science of this book, Weir maintains a careful balance between giving too much or too complicated information to the reader and not giving any at all. Weir avoids jargon and seamlessly sews together a narrative of both fantastical storytelling and scientific communication. Beyond that, the science explained in this novel goes in depth in several areas of science, such as microbiology, astrophysics, and even psychology. Even the most uninformed reader can gain a small sense of understanding in any of these disciplines through reading this novel.
Project Hail Mary is truly a stand out novel, and one that anyone can enjoy. Project Hail Mary is sure to warm your heart and activate your tear ducts, and I can’t recommend it enough.
