Letter to the Editor

To the Quest Editors,

I seriously cannot believe you published the miso article in that state. I thought we learned our lesson about calling Japanese food weird after Sam King's heinous Paradox review where he denigrated matcha as "the clippings of a pernicious weed." My impression is not that the author set out to do something xenophobic, but that they tried too hard to be funny and accidentally incorporated a common orientalist talking point. The nature of the article calling miso weird, and completely omitting any discussion of historical context, is othering a completely normal food for being of Japanese origin. I have never been so aware of attending a predominantly white institution. Last time, Ishani and I started a coffee column to balance out the terrible Paradox review. If we have to, we'll start a recipe column too.

May the stars watch over you,

Connor Gilligan
