“Reedies Resist” Petition Is for Students and the Entire Reed Community

On March 13, the Quest printed a petition to Reed’s administration and trustees urging Reed College to take a proactive, collaborative stance to resist the federal administration’s attacks on the independence of higher education. Unfortunately, the Quest headline implied that the “Resist Political Control of Higher Education” petition was only for Reed alumni to sign.

In fact, we invite all members of the Reed community, including students, alumni, current and former staff and faculty, and family or friends of the above to sign. Many Quest readers didn’t read the petition or didn’t consider signing it because they believed it wasn’t for them. It is.

The petition is hosted by Stand for Campus Freedom, a nonprofit organization whose website hosts similar petitions from a growing number of other colleges and universities, including several Ivy League schools, Amherst College, the University of California, the University of Michigan, and the University of Texas. (Use the QR in this letter to link to the Reed petition). As of Tuesday April 7, the Reed petition had 154 signers, including 92 alumni, 43 students, including some Student Senate members and a smattering of others. The drafters (the undersigned four Reed alumni) and all signers invite YOU to join them.
