Senate Beat Is Delayed
The start of the academic year is a time for new beginnings: new classes, new places to live, new Senate Public meetings, and new students going to those Senate Public meetings. The first Senate Public of this semester began at 4pm on Monday, August 31, and was held in the Eliot Chapel. The main purpose of the meeting was for Senators to introduce themselves and the committees on which they serve.
Student Body President Andrew Happy ‘27 (he/him) serves on a whopping 11 committees: Academic Support Services, the Presidential Council on Campus Climate (PCCC), Appeals Board, Commencement, Climate Assessment, CSO Liaison, Legislation Committee, Liaison for Student and Campus Life, Student Committee on Academic Policy and Planning (SCAPP), Student Publications, and Finance Committee (FinComm).
Student Body Vice President Taylor Barth ‘27 (he/him) serves on nine committees: PCCC, Alumni Liaison, Search for VP of the Office for Institutional Diversity (OID), FinComm, Admission and Financial Aid, Sports Services Liaison, Accountability Liaison, Climate Assessment, and Commencement.
Senator and Appointments Committee (AppComm) Co-Chair Stella Greer ‘29 (any/all) also serves on nine committees: PCCC, Alumni Liaison, Search for VP of OID, FinComm, Admission and Financial Aid, Sports Services Liaison, Accountability Liaison, Climate Assessment, and Commencement.
Greer also spoke for their fellow AppComm Co-Chair Sima Fasihi ‘28 (she/her), who will not be able to attend Senate Public this quarter due to a time conflict with PE (which is an important reminder that everyone should get their six PE credits to graduate on time!). Fasihi is on seven committees: Accessibility, Legislation, Reed Workers Union, SCAPP, Student Committee on Diversity (SCOD), HUM 110, Liaison to Accountability Groups, and Bylaw Review.
Head Treasurer Bella Reyes ‘27 (she/her) serves on five committees: Liaison to Student Groups with Space, Renn Fayre, FinComm, Stop Hazing, and Conference and Events Planning (CEP).
Senator Maya Gutierrez ‘27 (she/her) serves on eight committees: Center for Life Beyond Reed (CLBR), Liaison for Student Groups with Space, Liaison for Student and Campus Life, Library Board, SCOD, Title IX and Title VI, Bylaw Review, and AppComm.
Senator Sam Kuo ‘28 (he/him) serves on six committees: Community for Accessibility Resources and Disability Support (CARDS), Student and Campus Life, Reed Union, Residence Life, Title IX and Title VI, and SCOD.
Vice Treasurer Al McKee ‘29 (she/he) also serves on six committees: Admission and Financial Aid, Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD), Physical Plant, Renn Fayre, Student Publications, and FinComm.
Senator and Parliamentarian Manoel Pereira Lopes ‘28 (he/him) serves on eight committees: Accessibility, Art Collection/Mural, Commons (Bon Appetit Liaison/Board Points), Library Board, SCOD, Title IX and Title VI, Bylaw Review, and AppComm.
Assistant Treasurer Enzo Lawrence ‘28 (he/him) serves on six committees: Bookstore Board, Reed Union Committee, Renn Fayre, Title IX and Title VI, FinComm, and Website Liaison.
Senator J.R. Wallingford ‘27 (he/him) serves on eight committees: Academic Support Services (ASS) Liaison, AOD, Liaison for Student Groups with Space, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Sustainability, Bylaw Review, FinComm, and Student Publications.
Senator Quinn Capper ‘28 (he/him) serves on seven committees: Commons, Computer User Services (CUS0 Liaison, Liaison for Student and Campus Life, Liaison for Student Groups with Space, Sustainability, AppComm, and FinComm.
Senator Alastair Budd ‘27 (he/him) serves on eight committees: CLBR, HUM 110, Library Board, Reactor Operations, Registrar Liaison, AppComm, FinComm, and Computing Planning and Policy Committee (CPPC).
Senate Secretary Gabriela Montañez Gutiérrez ‘29 (she/her) is responsible for Executive and Public meeting minutes (for which the Quest is thankful), Senate social media, PR, and serving as International Student Services (ISS) Liaison and Website Liaison.
Senator Gutierrez announced that signator training was held on September 1 and 3.
In addition to Fasihi, Senator Magdalen Miller ‘29 was also absent for an undisclosed reason.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:20pm. Nine people attended, which is one person for every committee SB Vice President Barth serves on. Good job! Next week’s Senate Public will be on Monday, September 14, at 4pm in the Student Union. If even six more people show up, that will be an equal number of senators to audience members.
